Personal Anecdotes
The Mountains Called — And I Took Notes
The Mountains have taught me a few lessons.
#1: Awareness of breath — As Sir Edmund Hillary stated, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” Mountains have the power to make us feel small in all the right ways. Feeling my heart beat and the consciousness of my breath as I take each step at high elevations, bonds me to the present moment.
#2: Modesty — Mountains remind us that the world is not entirely man-made, controlled, and predictable. They call to our attention that we need to be durable and prepared without rigidity and inflexibility. Mountains command humility with their sheer angles and beautiful faces.
#3: Human Connections — In the mountains, the people who know them best, are the best people to know. It may sound obvious but with weather apps and webcams, news tweets, and tickers, looking down versus up seems to be the norm. If you don’t look up and connect with the people who know the mountains best, it can be a matter of life and death. And when it comes to other areas of our life, often times it’s who you know and the energy you commit to those relationships that enables forward progress.
#4: We Are All “Hitched” — Whether we live in mountain top villages or urban jungles, nature reveals itself to us when we pay attention. The less time we spend connected to the natural world, the higher our risk of depression, loss of empathy, and lack of altruism. As John Muir stated, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.”
#5: Not Everything is in Your Control — Mother Nature continually proves that she is fickle. Weather is continually changing, especially in the mountains. We all try to be prepared for our adventures in life, but sometimes we are side swiped. To expect the unexpected, and do my best to be flexible in a situation is important. During this time of uncertainty, identify the things that are in your control and those that are not—and for those that you can’t control, work to put those things to the side.
Mountains continue to have this magnetic pull on me, and each time I spend time in them, I take away a new lesson.
The X-Factor
“X marks the spot. The rest of your life begins today.” I saw this abstract art, and ironically while my daughter and I were on a treasure hunt at the park.
Throughout the years, I have put an “X” on blank pages, calendar days, white boards and post-it notes to remind myself that anything and everything that’s happened up to this moment, both good and bad, are now officially in the past. All that matters is what you do from this point forward.
The Marrow of Life
I went for a walk and found an elk skeleton in the woods.
It’s rib cage like the framework of a ship.
It’s spine hinged together like interlocking puzzle pieces.
And I stopped momentarily to imagine this animal’s life before its bones were visible, and how it came to rest in this very place.
For me, sometimes beauty is realizing the significance of life and the stories we leave behind.
Hive Fever
One of my colleagues asked me today how my bees are doing during wintertime. And it got me thinking, I haven’t been able to check in on my bees for about two and a half months. I started pondering as to how they’re coping. In case you’re wondering, bees do not hibernate. They do not become inactive to conserve energy. Instead, the colony acts like a tiny furnace by pumping their flight muscles all winter long. In the winter, honeybees cluster tightly inside of the hive to stay warm. The worker bees vibrate their bodies to generate heat. The queen is toward the center of the cluster where the temperature is around 90–100 °F. It takes a lot of energy to vibrate all day and night. In the winter, bees eat the honey they’ve stored away during the spring and fall, and move as a cluster from one honey frame to the next so as not to disperse heat. Trust me, when I am able to open up my hives in the spring to find a healthy colony, I feel accomplished as a beekeeper.
